Starting today, Nokia is pushing an over-the-air firmware update to the Maemo 5-based – first in the UK, and then globally (starting tomorrow).
The software update, version 1.2, brings new stuff to the Nokia N900, including: email improvements (Facebook IM chat is now bundled in), face-to-face video calling, web browsing in portrait mode, customizable menu system UI, and enhanced Ovi Maps.
Starting May 27, owners will also be able to get new games via Ovi Store, including titles like Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Weatherbug, Zen-bound, Angry Birds, GoGadget, Sygic, and Kroll.
Nokia has also confirmed it has no plans to officially update the to MeeGo, arguing that Maemo would "ensure that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device," while MeeGo would probably not guarantee that – and it makes sense, since the N900 was designed for Maemo, not for MeeGo (of course, MeeGo has a lot of Maemo in it, but they're still different platforms).
