AT&T announces the Android-based Samsung Captivate i897 – its own Galaxy S

Unwired View

It's big day for Android in US: while Verizon confirmed long-rumored Motorola Droid X, AT&T has announced Samsung Captivate i897 – heavily-customized version the Samsung Galaxy S (which should also be announced by T-Mobile).

AT&T says that the Samsung Captivate will available "in the coming months", without mentioning the smartphone's price (I bet it's not higher than the price iPhone 4 16GB – $199.99 contract).

The Captivate has most (if not all) the features the Galaxy S i9000 has, including:

  • 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED display
  • Android 2.1 (this will probably become Android 2.2 Froyo soon)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • A-GPS
  • Google Mobile Services (Android Market, Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Talk, YouTube)
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • 5MP camera HD video recording
  • 1GHz processor
  • 16GB internal memory
  • MicroSD card support

Finally, AT&ampT will have high-end Android smartphone. There were many voices saying the second largest US carrier doesn't want to launch high-end Android devices because that would hurt iPhone sales. The arrival of the Samsung Captivate might mean AT&T and Apple are close to ending their iPhone exclusivity deal – so Verizon can, as rumored, launch iPhone, too.
