As of yesterday, the new iPhone 4 can be pre-ordered in a few markets around the world – including, of course, the US, where the smartphone is offered only together with an AT&T contract agreement.
While there have not been reports of major problems in the UK, France or Germany, the first iPhone 4 pre-order day in the US has been catalogued by Gizmodo as a total disaster, mainly because of AT&T's pre-ordering system.
Customers who tried to pre-order the new iPhone online were frustrated by numerous errors that appeared in both AT&T’s and Apple’s system. Even worse, some customers complained that, when trying to log in to their AT&T account, the system would inexplicably log them in as different persons – this way exposing other subscribers' private information.
This is the second time in less than seven days when a security breach is found on AT&T's website, after the one that affected iPad 3G owners.
The single good thing coming out of this (good for Apple and AT&T) is that the iPhone 4 is now sold-out. Those who still want to pre-order it will receive it "on June 25 or later" – thus one day after the smartphone's actual launch in retail stores.
Anyway, with so much bad publicity, there might be quite many users to say "screw AT&Apple, I'm getting myself an HTC Droid Incredible / HTC EVO 4G / Samsung Galaxy S."
